I don’t know about you but, should the occasion arise, I have one or two thoughts as to my Desert Island Disc selection.
Of late, I’ve also jumped on the bandwagon and had a ponder as to my ideas for the ubiquitous Bucket List.
I’ll be honest, I have few pressing ambitions in that regard save to say it’s made me think afresh not so much what I’d like to achieve rather what kind of legacy I want to leave in my wake (or after my wake!).
A cursory visit to the My Kids Books section on this web site will show you that I’ve had the privilege of ticking quite a few boxes when it comes to book themes but one key topic as yet remains unfulfilled and it is this.
A book that teaches children on the person and work of the Holy Spirit.
Having been raised in a Christian environment it was being empowered by the Holy Spirit that revolutionised my relationship with Jesus.
Sadly, the Holy Spirit has often become victim to the fears and distrust of those who like their Christianity neatly packaged in a box marked ‘Safe’ or those who have misused that which God has given them and in the process tarnished the Holy Spirit’s good name.
The net result has been that many churches have kept the Holy Spirit under lock and key not only for adults but for kids also.
Jesus famously rebuked his disciples for trying to keep some children at arms length from him.
Sad to say, this approach has rumbled on down through the centuries and no surprise then that many kids have been turned off anything to do with God.
What was it that 2 Timothy 3:5 says about having a form of godliness but denying its power?
So, pretty close to the No.1 slot on my personal Bucket List would be a book, for kids, that showed them that connecting with God isn’t tantamount to signing up to a life of dull religion but pulling the switch to allow the very life of God to course through every fibre of their being and enable them to be world-changing agents of Jesus.
You can forget bungee jumping from a helicopter. I know what gives me the biggest kick!
